Call for Peer Presenters

Interested in making a difference? NAMI Tallahassee is currently looking for volunteers to present Ending the Silence, a mental health awareness classroom presentation for middle and high school age youth. NAMI is currently looking for individuals who are:

  • adults living in recovery, or who have a family member living with a mental health condition
  • young adults who are living in recovery and willing to share their personal experience with identifying, accepting, and living with a mental health condition

If selected, you will be trained by NAMI to present Ending the Silence. This program provides youth with the unique opportunity to learn about mental health from a two-person team with lived experiences. The presentation stresses early warning signs and provides resources and tools to help a person, friend, or family member who may be experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition.

Family-to-Family Teacher Training

2020-08-05T21:28:07-04:00

Friday, June 3 through Sunday, June 5 – Tallahassee

NAMI-Florida is pleased to announce that NAMI-Tallahassee is hosting a NAMI Family-to-Family teacher training and is offering spaces to outside affiliates. Because space will be limited, early submission of applications is encouraged.  This class is full.  New applications will be added to a “wait list.”

Location and training schedule:

  • Florida Council for Community Mental Health, Carriage House (conference space behind the historic Lewis House), 316 E. Park Avenue, Tallahassee, FL.  Seven blocks from the Capitol.
  • Candidates should be aware these are long days, with few breaks:
Friday, June 3 – 9:30am until 9:30pm. An extra-long day, with 1.5 hour for lunch and 1 hour for dinner; Saturday, June 4:  8am until 6pm.  Group dinner at 6:30, no class after dinner; Sunday, June 5:  8am until 1pm – 45 minute lunch.  The full schedule is linked here.

Qualifications, Expectations and NAMI Membership:
Prospective teachers must be family members or partners of individuals living with mental illness. Individuals attending the training are expected to commit to teaching two classes.  NAMI expects teachers to adhere to the curriculum and policy as outlined in the training. All candidates should be current NAMI members and graduates of a GodFamily-to-Family class unless your affiliate has not been able to offer the class on a regular basis.  If you need to establish or renew membership, please do so through the National organization as linked here.  This will entitle you to membership at three levels – national, state and local.

Registration and Costs:
Applications should be submitted through the online form linked below.

  • Online application link
  • There is no fee to NAMI-Tallahassee members.  All materials, meals and lodging are underwritten by the affiliate.  Outside affiliates will be billed $150 to cover the cost of materials and meals for the 3 day period.

Lodging:
A room block has been established at Home2Suites Hilton and is linked here.  Please utilize it to ensure your preferred type of room and tax-exempt rate.   The rate is available the night before as well.  Reservations must be received by 05/09/2016 in order to obtain the reduced rate.

This is an exceptionally nice hotel, which opened in October, is located 5 minutes away from the training site and near the State Capitol.  We hope you will plan on staying overnight in order to devote the entire week-end to the training.

NAMI-Tallahassee Members Only:
NAMI-Tallahassee is pleased to cover the cost of the training week-end with the exception of a private hotel room.  Individuals requiring a private room may anticipate splitting the cost with us — which we anticipate to be $100. Some of you have expressed a preference to commute, which is an option on the form. To ensure the reduced room-rate, reservations should be coordinated through NAMI-Tallahassee as noted on the online application.

Trainers/Contact:
The trainers will be Nita Kirkpatrick, a teacher nationally trained in 2015, and Pat Stephens, a veteran teacher/trainer.  Don’t hesitate to contact them at 850.544.4522, if you need additional information
